3 Willows: the sisterhood grows by Ann Brashares

If there are any fans of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series by Ann Brashares, we've got good news: the author has written another book. It's not necessarily another Traveling Pants book- this one takes place in the same setting but it involves a new set of girls. Some of the characters from the Traveling Pants books do make appearances in this new one though. It can be considered a new series with new characters or perhaps a companion novel to the original series books.

Either way, if you liked the Traveling Pants, chances are you'll like this new book: 3 Willows: the sisterhood grows by Ann Brashares. It's available to check out from the library in book format or in audiobook format on CD.

Poetry Contest

Attention Poets: The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association has announced its 23rd Annual Young Poets Contest. Students in grades 3-12 are eligible to enter. American Library Association awards announced

On Monday, January 26th, the American Library Association announced the winners of many major book awards, including:

The Newbery Award, for excellence in children's literature- The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

The Caldecott Award, for best illustration in a children's book- The House in the Night by Susan Marie Swanson

The Printz Award, for excellence in literature for young adults- Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta

Best Books of 2008

And now for the final post in a three-part blog series on the best of 2008... you love 'em, we love 'em, it's what libraries have always been about (and will always be about) ... books.

1. The Young Adult Library Services Association (the teen section of the American Library Association) has a website filled to the brim with booklists of all kinds. You can find award winners, teen choice winners, graphic novel lists, popular paperbacks, etc. Here is the 2008 Best Books for Young Adults list.

2. Teen Reads is a website that is essential to visit if you love teen books. The staff of Teen Reads compiled their list of Best Books of 2008. Right now they are also having a vote for the Teen Choice Best Books of 2008. Visit their website to vote and click here to see the list of books that others teens from around the world have nominated. (Voting ends January 31st... so hurry!)

3. Reading Rants is a fabulous website devoted to "out of the ordinary" teen book choices. You can spend hours discovering all the booklists they have on their site! Here's the Top Ten from 2008.

Coming soon, the Hauppauge Library will have a new and improved booklist section for teens on our Teen Frequency website. We're working tirelessly on updating our booklists and converting them from the old-fashioned paper pamphlets (that you could only enjoy if you were physically in the library) to cyber-space versions that you can access from anywhere.

Here is the trailer for the movie Coraline, based on the book of the same name by Neil Gaiman. Read the book or the graphic novel before you see the movie in February.

Movie and Munchies voting results

Fabulous display- YA magazines

On Tuesday, January 13th the Teen Decorating Committee got to work decorating the metal holders that house the back issues of our young adult magazine collection. The holders were sturdy and functional, but... let's just say... not so pleasing to the eye.





Now, thanks to the hard work and creativity of the decorating committee, these magazine holders are oh-so-cool! Check out the pictures:

Hey, speaking of movies... did you know that Sunday, January 18th at 2:00pm we're having a movie afternoon for teens? Not just any movie showing, but one that YOU get to choose.

Visit the Hauppauge Public Library website before Friday, January 16th to have your voice heard. Click on what we like to call "the fade"- that's the box of rotating program announcements that fade from one image to another. When you see the ad for "Teen Movie and Munchies", click on it and it will take you to a page where you can vote on which movie you'd like us to show. Voting ends this Friday (January 16th) so act now!

Remember, Teen Movie and Munchies... this Sunday, January 18th... 2:00pm.

Oh, and make sure to sign-up for this program by calling us or stopping by the library- this way we can stock up on the right amount of munchies!
