From e-books, audiobooks, music, and movies to games, databases, homework help, and more, the library is the place where you can plug in and stay connected. To celebrate during Teen Tech Week in a few weeks, we’re asking you to tell us the name of an App you’ve used recently or a Database that has helped you with research and why you liked it.  We’ll post your comments here on our teen blog and enter you into a raffle drawing for an iTunes gift card!   

Remember: The raffle doesn't begin until Sunday, March 10, but you can start thinking now about which App or Database you'd like to tell us about.

If you, or someone you know, is in the midst of planning for college, you may be interested in the following information:

 

The Hauppauge Public Library is offering another installment of "The College Search and U" (HPY2042) on Wednesday, March 20 from 7:00- 8:30pm. Jack Nelson, a college admissions counselor with years of international experience, will be here with an organized, step-by-step method by which to narrow the focus of your college search, application, and selection process.   Jack is fantastic at structuring his presentation to his audience.  Personal scenarios and specific questions are encouraged!  Don’t miss this extremely informative class- perfectly timed before the high school College Fair and spring break!  Registration for this program begins Saturday, March 2, 2013.

Student Leadership Opportunity from Bank of America

Here's an interesting opportunity from Bank of America for high school juniors and seniors: 2013 Student Leaders Program.  Five students from Long Island will be chosen to participate in this program. 

Here's some information taken directly from their website:

The Student Leaders^® Program is an eight-week summer experience for high school juniors and seniors. The program includes a paid internship with a local nonprofit organization as well as the Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C., July 8-13, 2013. The program gives Student Leaders^® the opportunity to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on community work experience while discovering their own talents for serving their community and leading others.

ELIGIBILITY

 To become a Student Leader, you must:

• Currently be a junior or senior in high school
• Be able to participate in an 8-week paid internship at a local nonprofit/charitable organization and work 35 hours a week
• Be legally authorized to work in the US without sponsorship through the end of September 2013
• Be able to participate in a week-long Student Leadership Summit in Washington, DC (July 8- July 13, 2013). (All expenses paid as part of the Student Leaders Program. This week will be part of your 8-week experience.)
• Be a student in good standing at your school
• Obtain a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, or school administrator.

John and Hank Green: An Evening of Awesome

If you are a huge John Green fan, you probably already know about this- John and his brother, Hank, performed to a sold-out crowd at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday, January 15, 2013.  SOLD OUT!  That's awesome for anyone to do, but even more awesome for an author to do!   And being it was a YA author makes it all the sweeter! 

There were many guests that joined them along the way throughout the night (musicians, actors, authors, and friends) with songs, readings and general laugh-out-loud fun.  If you were like me, having missed seeing this live in NYC, you may be pleasantly surprised that you can still experience the evening's events via the following link.  Enjoy John and Hank Green: An Evening of Awesome! Teen Read Week 2012!

Are you a teen? Did you know it's Teen Read Week? Teen Read Week started in 1998 and is celebrated annually the third week of October (this year it's October 14-20). It encourages you to read for the fun of it and every year it has a different theme. It's important to celebrate Teen Read Week because, even though there are lots of really great entertainment options out there, reading for fun is free, entertaining, and proven to help improve test scores!

This year's theme is It Came From The Library! It can be interpreted however you want, but why not check out some of these popular and wonderful YA books that are both spooky and mysterious?
